Breaking news from the land of happy little trees
Im sure you all know that I simply don't post here very often. But once in a while I will run across something so important that it simply needs to be shared.

Today while checking the website of one of my favorite artists I ran across an important piece of news. Now I couldn't find a direct link to the story so if any of you come back later I cant promise this will still be at the top of the news page. You know how quickly things can change in the fast paced world of Bob Ross. One minute there are a few vertical lines and the next thing you know... *BAM* a bunch of happy little trees, complete with animal friends.

In case anyone get to this too late I will give you the gist of the story. Bob Ross... thats right, THE Bob Ross of PBS's Joy of Painting fame, is getting his own video game.

You heard that right. A Bob Ross video game where I can only assume you will spend your time making "happy little trees" and "beating the devil" out of your controller when you want to change paints. If only Bob were still alive to see this glorious vision fulfilled.

Actually, in all seriousness, this game is going to be out for the PC as well as Nintendo's DS and Revolution. The new interfaces on the DS and Revolution (which uses a motion sensitive controller that tracks its movement in 3D for control) could make something like this rather interesting.

I cant wait to see what the guys at Penny Arcade have to say about this.

The mind boggles.

(I remember happening across the show and finding it oddly mesmerizing. Very relaxing to watch, though I couldn't imagine actually painting anything.)

oh no doubt about that... watching Bob Ross is like a zen experience. I can be totally sucked into his show, just sitting there, listening to his soft spoken phrases about happy little trees and pretty little mountains.

I always loved that.

One of the blogs I read posted the following image when they mentioned this news.

Or... you could actually go out and paint something. I'm sorry, but this just sounds retarded... I'm all for Dance Dance Revolution keeping childhood obesity rates down as a substitute for actual sports and exercise, but painting is really not that hard, folks... certainly not so difficult that you need to buy a video game to do it... :/

I dont know... is it really any worse than a sports game?

Personally, the only reason I am really interested (other than the novelty of a Bob Ross game) is to see what they do with the interface. Given the unusual input devices Nintendo is putting out, im excited to see what kind of stuff game developers come up with for it.

Im so sick of traditional games.

Mind you, I learned how to paint by watching Bob Ross on PBS (we called him the Painting Guy) and the reality of the happy tree is "Fuck! I made a compositional mistake, lets cover it with a big ass tree"

Seems like this company is trying to target that part of society who are not into first person shooters or rpg games. Painting on a computer is not the same as painting in the RW.

While painting is easy for me, there are some folks out there who are making ugly ass paintings. Art is subjective, however, so what I think is crap, someone else thinks is gold.

This is the real reason I am actually interested in this. I mean, I've been playing FPS games since Wolf 3D. Sure the graphics keep getting better and better, but even when playing the latest quake I sill expect to turn a corner and hear "Achtung!"

There just isn't anything new there.

I know a few people with the Nintendo DS right now and some of the games for that system are unlike anything else out there. The interface is new and different and I find that compelling. I cant wait to get my hand on a Revolution and see what kind of games people make for that new input device. "Star wars: Light-saber Duel" here I come!
